A
second day of action called for 3rd December 2013
It is
confirmed that members of the three campus unions, UNISON, Unite and UCU, will
walk out again on Tuesday 3rd December and be joined by Scottish
education union, the EIS, unless the dispute over pay is resolved.
We are
calling on employers, via the UCEA, to get back into talks as a matter of
urgency.
There is now
a cumulative operating surplus in the higher education sector of over £1
billion.
The squeeze
on staff pay comes at a time when pay and benefits for university leaders
increased, on average, by more than £5,000 in 2011-12, with the average pay and
pensions package for vice-chancellors hitting almost £250,000.
Our own
vice-chancellor sits on the board of the UCEA and is one of the number saying
‘No’ to a reasonable pay rise for us.
However, has he applied the same argument to his own circumstances? NO
Look at the
figures. Do you think this is fair?
·
The VC has had a 15.4% pay increase in the last 4 years to £277,000
(2012)
·
In contrast staff have suffered a 13% real terms pay cut
· The VC earns over £1000 PER WORKING
DAY
·
There are 16 members of staff at this university earning
over £200,000 pa
·
The number of staff earning over £100,000 pa has risen from
64 in 2011 to 299 in 2012
·
The VC last year
received a performance payment of £40,000. BUT our place in the world rankings
published in Times Higher has dropped by 56 places
·
It would take a
cleaner working full time (37 hours a week) 20 years and 6 months to earn
what the VC earns in one year
·
The £37,600 pension
payment to the VC (2012) would pay the annual salary of 3 catering staff
or one L5 staff member
·
If the VC made 'only' £177,000, that extra money could lift 140
full time Level 1 staff onto a Living Wage!'
This is not fair! It is not
right!
Fight for
fair pay in higher education – join us for the next day of strike
action on
Tuesday 3 December. For further
information contact us on the
emails below.
Did you know? UCU asked that the money
deducted for strike pay on 31st October be
donated to the Student's Hardship
(Opportunity) fund. University of
Southampton said 'NO'!
